Valhalla Rising me sorprendió por muchos aspectos, como el tratamiento realista de la época y cultura vikinga, pero lo que podía haberse convertido en una simple cinta de espada y aventuras, es mucho más que eso.

Sus largos planos mudos, su frialdad narrativa, sus introspectivos protagonistas y el retrato atávico de la naturaleza nórdica encajan perfectamente con los temas de violencia, muerte, religión y la aceptación sincera del orden de las cosas, incluido el propio destino.

I really enjoy when I find those special films with only a few previous aesthetic references, and whose originality is based precisely in authenticity, not only archeologically-wise, but also in the cultural and thematic senses.

Valhalla Rising surprised me because of many aspects, as the realistic treatment of the Viking epoch and culture, but what could have just turned into a sword and adventure film, turned out to be much more.

Its long shots, its narrative coldness, its introdpective characters and the atavistic portrait of nordic nature perfectly fit with its themes of violence, religion and death, and the sincere acceptance of the Order of the world, including one's own destiny.
